Techne or Episteme? The Persisting Medical Dichotomy

Artist Statement

Artist: David Cieremans, SOMA

Ensign David A. Cieremans, M.S. is a first-year medical student at A.T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona and former clinical researcher at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in the Division of Neurooncology. He graduated with his M.S. from the Institute of Human Nutrition at Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in May 2020 with honors for his thesis work on the predictive evaluation of quantitative spatial profiling of the tumor microenvironment by multiplex immunofluorescence in recurrent glioblastoma treated with PD-1 inhibitors under the guidance of Dr. Fabio Iwamoto. He is a recipient of full-scholarship to medical school through the United States Navy’s Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) and president of the Student Association of Military Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (SAMOPS) and Sports Medicine Club chapters at ATSU-SOMA. While working at Columbia for four years, he developed a passion for cancer research and hopes to pursue orthopedic surgery and fellowship in orthopedic oncology.
