Health Enhanced by Art 2020 (HEArt Journal)

To Engineer Learning

Art Description

"Medicine is humbling. Especially during these challenging times, facing the unknowns that this world pandemic has brought us. Unfortunately, there is no way around it, only through it. A.T. Still refers to the Osteopath as a ""human engineer."" Perhaps now more than ever we must stay curious and enourage our students of medicine to remain ever vigilant, with a deep desire to understand the inner workings of true healing. The COVID-19 pandemic has reawoken something within me. I have found great comfort in painting and sewing during the very few precious moments spent away from either teaching in a wole new way or working in the Emergency Department during this busy time. These quite moments of creation and curiousity have carried my spirit through. Mixed media: 2.5"" x 5"""

Artist Statement

Artist: Christina Weaver, Employee

I started medical school two-weeks before my 40th birthday. I had heard about osteopathy and attended courses in basic science on nights and weekends so I could be part of such a noble profession, one that would no doubt challenge me for all my days. Prior to this I was an artist and designer working in all things creative. I graduated from A.T. Still SOMA in 2014, discovered my love for teaching during residency and fellowship, only to return as full-time faculty here in Arizona. For years I had to put my love for creating on hold while I channeled all of my energy into learning medicine. Now, in this time of self-isolation and need for healing, I have once again found great comfort in my creative endeavors.
