Guidance for CGHS Students on the Use of AI Tools in Academic Work

Generative AI can play a supportive and beneficial role in the learning process. CGHS recognizes that AI can serve as a useful tool to support your learning experience. The goal is to encourage you to explore various learning aids, including generative AI powered tools, while still maintaining academic integrity. Remember to give credit where it is due. Additionally, exercise critical thinking to identify and address any inaccuracies that might arise.

It is essential for students to be open and honest about their use of AI in assignments. Our goal is to help students understand the importance of academic integrity and the responsible use of AI. Adhering to the course policies regarding AI is crucial to maintain fairness and equality for everyone in the learning environment.

CGHS students may use AI applications for brainstorming ideas, outlining, identifying additional areas to investigate, summarizing, reviewing material, and refining writing.  However, AI should not be used as a substitute for a student’s own original work. To that end, the following statements are provided to provide guidance for CGHS students:

  1. Ask first: Consult your instructor if you're unsure about how you may use AI for an assignment.
  2. Think critically: Use AI to enhance, not replace, your own thinking and creativity.
  3. Be transparent: Always disclose / acknowledge when you've used AI tools in your work.
  4. Cite properly: Include appropriate citations for AI-generated content.
Example reference:  OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (Mar 7 version) [Large language model]. https://chat.openai.com/chat
    Example citation:  (OpenAI, 2023)
  5. Verify information: Fact-check AI-generated content to ensure accuracy.
  6. Maintain originality: Ensure your work primarily reflects your own ideas and analysis.
  7. Uphold integrity: Avoid misuse of AI that could violate academic conduct codes.
  8. Understand AI: Learn about AI's capabilities, limitations, and potential biases.
  9. Respect ethics: Be mindful of privacy and ethical considerations, especially in healthcare settings.
  10. Stay updated: Keep learning about AI developments and their academic implications and continue to engage in dialogues about responsible AI use in your field.
