Journals allow students to store information and documents in an organized system. Some uses for a journal within a course include:
Journals use the Assignments tool in Canvas, but only allow students to type in their submission.
We generally think of Assignments as papers that students write. However, this type of assessment in Canvas is used for any type of file that a student would upload, including spreadsheets, presentation files, images. etc. Assignments can be submitted by individuals or from a group of students, and multiple attempts are allowed.
If a page count for an assignment is specified, that count does not include a title page or a reference page.
In some courses, students are assigned formal peer reviews. These assignments allow students to review each other anonymously using a specific set of criteria. As many students will become peer reviewers in their professional careers, these assignments show students some of the processes involved.
The grade you give/receive on the peer reviews will not be counted towards your final grade. In the Grades, this is the column with the / (i.e., M3/M4). However, the quality of your submission and the quality of your peer review feedback will be graded. This will be indicated by individual grade columns (i.e., M3 Submission for Peer Review, M4 Peer Review Grading) . Please see the Grades for the specific grading criteria for the peer review submission and the peer reviews.
With the peer review, students cannot submit late work. The peer review process is automatic, so students submitting late are excluded from the peer review process and may lose significant course points. It is highly recommended that students submit work early in the week to ensure there are no technical difficulties.
Peer reviews are automatically distributed at 11:59 pm AZ time Monday.
