Getting Your Course Ready for the Term

At CGHS, the Instructional Design team takes care of copying your course from the master template to the shell course for the coming term. The IDs copy the content, double-check links, ensure the assessments total 1,000 points, and so forth.

You can help ensure your course functions properly for your students throughout the term by taking care of a few housekeeping details, both before the course opens to students (one week before each term officially begins) and during the term.

  1. Course Access
You will be given access to your course approximately 3 weeks prior to the start of the term. You'll receive an email from
cghsdesigners@atsu.edu when it's ready. You will then need to complete the Course Prep Checklist in IRMA within 72 hours. You must submit a checklist for each section you teach (even if they're multiple sections of the same course). In the copy process, there is always a potential for things to not copy properly to each section. In additon, many of the tasks to complete are section-specific.

  2. Make sure you have the correct edition of the textbook
The syllabus will have the correct textbook edition for the course. Just because a book was used the last time you taught the course doesn't mean that it will be used again. A publisher could release a new edition, or the book may have gone out of print.

If you need a new edition or a new book,
contact the publisher immediately to obtain a desk copy. Books are also often available in electronic format through VitalSource. Your teaching status will need to be verified by CGHS, but once that's done you can have almost immediate access to a large inventory of textbooks in digital format.

  3. Review the content on the module pages, including the textbook readings, articles, links, etc.
If you find anything that needs to be changed, submit a Course Correction ASAP. The Course Correction Form is located in IRMA or you can send a detailed email to
    cghsdesigners@atsu.edu.

  4. Check the Instructor Resources section for any special instructions for the course
Some courses require instructors to know unique information to prepare for the course. For example, wikis do not copy from the master course, so the instructor may need to create a wiki page for the students to use. Some courses may have groups that need to be set up. Any special instructions for a course will be included in this section.

  5. Edit your Instructor Information in the course
Your faculty information should include a headshot photo, phone, if you allow text messages, email, time zone, office/contact hours, and a short biography.  Please contact cghsdesigners@atsu.edu if you need additional assistance.  They can also assist with formatting your picture.

  6. Post your welcome announcement

  7. Post your introduction in the Coffee Shop.

  8. Subscribe to all discussion forums.

  9. Review the course roster
The academic advisors will send you a course roster with student names and contact information.  Make sure this list matches the student list in Canvas.
