Wikis Explained

Wikis have gotten a bad rap thanks to the Wikipedia website, but they are one of the most powerful collaborative tools.  Wikis allow the participants to collaborate on course documents in real time. A wiki tracks participation and document versions, so all participants can see what has been done by whom and when. Wikis can contain text, file attachments, and multimedia.

Some uses for wikis include:

  • group projects
  • student-generated FAQs
  • annotated bibliographies
  • content repositories

If you've ever used a Google Doc to share information, you've used a wiki! In Canvas, Pages or Google Docs will be used for wiki assessments.

In Canvas, the Wiki content will be located either in Pages or in Collaborations.  However, to grade, there will be a separate grade column where the rubric is housed and where instructors grade. This column will be identified with the word "Instructions" after the title. On the module page, the wiki instructions will be first, and the actual wiki will immediate follow.  If you need assistance, please contact cghsdesigners@atsu.edu.
