Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad (FRA) Program

The Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad (FRA) fellowships program contributes to the development and improvement of modern foreign language and area studies in the U.S. by providing opportunities for scholars to conduct research abroad.
The FRA program funds fellowships through institutions of higher education (IHEs) to faculty members who propose to conduct research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies to improve their skill in languages and their knowledge of the culture of the people of these countries. Fellows conduct research abroad for periods of 3 to 12 months. Funds support: travel expenses to and from the residence of the fellow and the country or countries of research, a maintenance stipend for the fellow related to his or her academic year salary, and an allowance for research-related expenses overseas such as books and photocopying, tuition, affiliation fees, local travel, and other incidental expenses. Proposals focusing solely on Western Europe are not eligible.

The one-year Fellowship curriculum involves bi-monthly two-hour seminars on the second and fourth Thursdays from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm. The curriculum covers a broad spectrum of historical and contemporary issues in health professional education. Experiential learning is a key component of the Fellowship. Fellows demonstrate and receive feedback from the directors and their peers on lecturing, case-based discussions, giving feedback to learners and other skills. They develop teaching cases, conduct peer reviews of teaching, write reflections on memorable teaching and learning experiences and engage with experts in education and research. Sessions will be led by the directors and invited speakers.
Fellows are expected to implement an education research project focusing on an important issue in health professional education. The Fellows provide input for each other’s projects over the course of the year. They also have opportunities to discuss their projects with education fellows across the Harvard Medical School (HMS) system. They present their projects to these fellows at HMS and to their mentors and invited guests during a June graduation session at Mount Auburn Hospital.
