APHL and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) partner to offer paid laboratory internships to train and prepare college students for careers at public health laboratories. Funded through the American Rescue Plan, interns join public health laboratory teams to make an impact on protecting the health of our communities. Interns assist laboratory professionals working on meaningful projects, like detecting genetic disorders in newborn babies, monitoring drinking water, tracking viruses carried by insects and testing soil for environmental toxins.

Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) - Applied Epidemiology Fellowship

Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) established the Applied Epidemiology Fellowship (AEF) which is closely designed after the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) program and using a mentorship model to train recent graduates in the expanding field of applied epidemiology. National Rural Health Association (NRHA) - Unpaid Internships

As a national nonprofit membership organization dedicated to providing leadership on rural health issues through advocacy, communications, education, and research, NRHA has developed a robust internship program where interns can grow professionally and gain firsthand knowledge about rural health. Communications Team Concentration

This internship concentration offers the opportunity to support NRHA’s existing communication avenues. Your main role will be to monitor and assess rural health news alerts, inquiries, and submissions, allowing our communications team to report on the issues of greatest import in the association’s newsletter, reaching thousands of NRHA members and constituents. U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) - Junior Commissioned Officer Student Training and Externship

Application Deadline: July 30, 2025

Students in health-related undergraduate, masters and doctoral programs can train alongside active duty officers during their school breaks as part of the Junior Commissioned Officer Student Training and Extern Program. Participants are paid, and receive health benefits, housing and travel allowances. Programs last between 30 and 120 days. Participants become inactive Public Health Service officers upon completing the program and can activate upon graduation. There is no obligation to join the USPHS Commissioned Corps.

Become an officer upon graduation

In the Senior Commissioned Officer Student Training and Extern Program, students entering their final year of graduate school or professional training get paid while in school in exchange for committing to enroll in the USPHS Commissioned Corps upon graduation. Students receive the basic pay and allowances of an Ensign while in the program and are guaranteed a spot in the USPHS Commissioned Corps upon graduation. The service obligation is equal to twice the time sponsored.

Program Description

The Applied Public Health Informatics Fellowship (APHIF) is an opportunity to build informatics capacity at state, tribal, local, and territorial(STLT) health departments while training recent masters or doctoral graduates in applied public health practice. Since 2009, more than 10,000 remote interns have advanced the work of the federal government. The time commitment is about 10 hours per week during the school year.
