Academic Resources for all CGHS Students | A.T. Still University

Fellowships vs Residencies

This tab is focused on fellowships and internships. As such, this sub-tab lists an array of fellowships available for nurses. With the exception of public health residencies, we do not also list residency programs. What's the difference? Check out this post: Nursing Residency and Nursing Fellowships.

If you're looking for a residency instead, you may want to start with this guide: Finding New Grad Nurse Residency Programs

Otherwise, check out the list below for an array of fellowship choices. If your local health system isn't listed, they may still offer fellowships or similar programs, especially for in-house employees. Check your local health systems for available opportunities.

The Health and Aging Policy Fellows Program

Application Deadline: April 15, 2024 The 2024 opportunity is closed; check back in March 2025.

Location: Washington, DC or rotating hybrid

With an aging population, one of the greatest challenges for the U.S. is ensuring that policies provide the best possible quality of life for all across all dimensions of society – from the communities where we live, the transportation we depend on, the food we eat, and the health care we receive. Success will require the translation of cutting-edge science and practical clinical experience into sound health policy. The goal of the Health and Aging Policy Fellows Program is to provide professionals in health and aging with the experience and skills necessary to help lead this effort, and in so doing, shape a healthy and productive future for older Americans.

The Health and Aging Policy Fellows Program offers two different tracks for individual placement: (1) a residential track that includes a nine-to-12-month placement in Washington, D.C. or at a state agency (as a legislative assistant in Congress, a professional staff member in an executive branch agency or in a policy organization); (2) a non-residential track that includes a health policy project and brief placement(s) throughout the year at relevant sites. The project may be focused at a global, federal, state or community level.

In addition, through our partnership with the veterans health administration, VA employees can participate in the VA track as a non-residential fellow.

Core program components focused on career development and professional enrichment are provided for fellows in all tracks.

Boston Medical Center - Grayken Addiction Nursing Fellowship

Application Deadline: November 8, 2024 The 2024 opportunity is closed; check back in Fall 2025

Location: Boston, MA

Addiction nursing fellows spend one day per week participating in clinical and educational activities that are focused on SUD. The fellowship spans six months, with two nurse fellows per cycle. The fellowship is based on a mixture of experiential and didactic learning opportunities to engage fellows in settings that are focused primarily on treatment and harm reduction.

Fellows participate in patient care in BMC clinical settings and observe treatment in partnered community-based settings. Nurse fellows perform patient assessments, develop treatment plans for patients, and learn to present patient’s SUD needs to a clinical supervisor.

Fellows also participate in didactic learning opportunities (lectures and case conferences) with the Addiction Medicine Fellows. This learning is supplemented with nursing focused tutorials offered by the faculty of the Addiction Nursing Fellowship, and by self-paced study of online addiction nursing curriculums.
