Primary Respiratory Mechanism of Flight

Artist Statement

While reading Dr. William Garner Sutherland’s book Teachings in the Science of Osteopathy, I was struck by his explanation of primary respiratory motion as the flapping wings of a bird. I imagined an egret taking flight and felt compelled to put that thought onto canvas. This painting represents my interpretation of Dr. Sutherland’s description of cerebrospinal fluid motion and the brilliant lines of color that I both see and feel emanating like waves through the body and through my hands with each cycle. Each pattern is different for each patient, following areas of minor restriction that impact craniosacral motion and change, ever so slightly, the shape of that wave.
