Plastic Desert

Artist Statement

I assist in teaching students the specialized skill of fabricating custom hand orthotics/splints out of thermoplastic material. We try our best to reduce waste, however inevitably we end up with scraps of plastic that is thrown away. A student inspired me to create this project because she asked if it was possible to recycle the unused plastic. I decided to "upcycle" only leftover scraps to create this work. The various shades of plastic material reminded me of the striations of color in the rock of Arizona's Painted Desert. The plastic scraps were heated and remolded to create the layers of color that is seen in the image of the work.
