This is a poem I wrote about one of the patients I cared for in the ICU. She had struggled with alcohol use disorder for many years and came to us as a readmission for decompensated liver failure. I watched her body shut down despite every medical intervention we could offer. She died shortly after being denied an emergency liver transplant.
