A.T. Still Memorial Library is pleased to announce the launch Tuesday (December 10) morning of our Still OneSearch tool which will enable you to search most of the Library’s collections in a single search. This special issue of Check-It-Out, our Library newsletter, has been created to introduce our new search tool and the redesign of our web site around this new tool.
As many of you are aware the Library has greatly expanded its digital resources over the past several years and our online collections now include: Over 150,000 E-Books; Over 20,000 E-Journals; Over 55 platforms and databases; Multiple point-of-care resources, including UptoDate, First Consult, ACP Smart Medicine (PIER), Essential Evidence Plus, and Rehabilitation Reference Center. In addition, we have added access to many new databases, such as AccessMedicine, ClinicalKey and Micromedex. Our old website was overwhelming in the number of choices and the need to separately search multiple resources to find the best answers to questions. We have been aware of this for a number of years but the tool to create a single search box was not available until this year. As soon as we decided that this new tool would do what we needed for creating an effective cross-product search, we purchased it and have spent the last several months developing it.
The challenge of developing an effective discovery tool (the term used in libraries for a single search system) is twofold. First, it must be easy to use, as many of our users are overwhelmed with their own work and studies. Second, it needs to produce precise, relevant results to enable our users to locate actionable, quality evidence/information. The Library staff thinks that Still OneSearch accomplishes this. We hope you find it as useful as we think it is, and are looking forward to your feedback and suggestions as to how the Library can continue to support you, our patrons.
