Thoughts from the Missouri Branch Director

The A.T.Still Memorial Library staff in Kirksville has been anticipating the completion of the new Inter-professional Education & Dentistry School (IPEDS) building.  The exterior of the building is finished and construction crews are working on the interior and landscaping.  The process of interviewing dental school candidates is complete.  This building will be the home for the MOSDOH staff, students and the “Simulated Computerized Manikins.”

The A.T. Still Memorial Library staff enjoyed participating in ATSU-KCOM orientation activities and ATSU-SHM faculty development and graduation activities July 10-13, 2013.

Awards, Appointments & Conferences

Awards:  Jean L. Sidwell, MALS, Library Branch Director, ATSU Missouri campus received the “Excellence in Advising Award” for 2012-13, for performing in an exemplary manner as the advisor to the American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians of Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine.  This is her fifth year as advisor and Jean previously received this award in 2011.  The Department of Student Affairs award is given to advisors of student organizations that provide exceptional volunteer service to the community and the University and engaged their members in activities, education, and leadership opportunities. Jean received this award at the University Student Organization Leadership Orientation 5/1/13.

Appointments:  Margaret Hoogland, Distance Support Librarian, has been appointed the position of “Instructor for the ATSU School of Health Management,” to take effect May 1, 2013.

Conferences Attended:  Margaret Hoogland, Distance Support Librarian, and Jean L. Sidwell, MO Branch Library Director, attended the Medical Library Association, MLA, Annual Conference in Boston, Massachusetts, May 4-8, 2013.  The Theme is “One Health: Information in an Interdependent World.”  This year will provide a unique opportunity to explore the global interdependency of health information at a federated international meeting incorporating the 2013 Annual Meeting and Exhibition of the MLA, the 11th International Congress on Medical Librarianship (ICML), the 7th International Conference of Animal Health Information Specialists (ICAHIS), and the 6th International Clinical Librarian Conference (ICLC).  Sidwell attended the Osteopathic Libraries SIG, OLSIG meeting.

Jean L. Sidwell attended the MOBIUS 15th Annual Conference in Jefferson City, Missouri, on June 3-4 and “Lead the Change,” event on June 5, 2013, designed to enhance personal leadership skills, while examining today’s leadership best practices.

 

Professional Development Activities

David Owens, Public Services Manager, is enrolled in an online distance program at San Hose State University to complete a Masters in Library Science.

Leisa Walter, Public Services Library Assistant - ILL & ETDC, recently received the Enrollment Assistance Award of $175.00 for the Library Support Staff Certification (LSSC) Program from the American Library Association-Allied Professional Association (ALA-APA), in cooperation with the Missouri State Library.  LSSC is designed to recognize the value and accomplishments of Library Support Staff.  Candidates successfully complete six of ten competency sets.
