What is Intervention Research?

Intervention research examines the effects of an intervention on an outcome of interest. The primary purpose of intervention research is to bring a desirable outcome for individuals in need (e.g., reduce depressive symptoms or strengthen reading skills).

Useful vocabulary

Comparative effective research
Research that aims to improve health care outcomes at the individual and population levels by directly comparing the benefits and harms of two or more clinical or public health interventions.

Multilevel interventions

In clinical research, a multilevel intervention can refer to an intervention which addresses more than one risk factor in a single intervention, or to an intervention which is aimed at the patient and at least two additional levels of influence on medical care, such as organizations, families, or social groups.

Propensity scores

The probability of an individual being assigned to a test group rather than a control group in an intervention study.

Propensity score matching

Used to estimate the effect of an intervention.
