Information Literacy Tutorial

This tutorial provides progressive modules to advance medical students' information literacy skills from novice to advanced

Purpose of this tutorial:

• To ensure that each KCOM student meets the Osteopathic Considerations for Core Entrustable Professional Activities for Entering Residency
• To instruct students in the process of how to develop clinical questions, and retrieve, critically evaluate and apply evidence to patient care. (Source: AACOM Competencies and EPA 7)

Competencies addressed within this tutorial: 

1. How to develop a clinical question
2. How to use information technology to access clinically accurate information
3. How to evaluate the sources and content of medical information
4. How to apply critical thinking and scientific reasoning in the acquisition and application of medical information

The Association of College & Research Libraries defines information literacy as a set of abilities requiring individuals to “recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.”

Information literacy for medical professionals: 

• The ability to critically determine the best type of information needed to answer a clinical question
• The ability to critically determine where to find the best information that is needed
• How to critically evaluate the information obtained
• How to determine if the information obtained applies to the clinical question asked
