At the annual meeting of the Medical Library Association (MLA) in Toronto, Canada, in May, Michael Kronenfeld, our University Librarian, was inducted as a Fellow of the Medical Library Association. Five new Fellows are selected each year. As described on the MLA website, “MLA Fellows are members and elected by the Board of Directors for sustained and outstanding contributions to health sciences librarianship and to the advancement of the purposes of MLA”. This honors his over forty years of work and his contributions to the MLA and to the profession of medical librarianship.
Hal Bright, AZ Campus Branch Manager/Electronic Resources Librarian, was recognized as a Distinguished Member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals on October 1, 2015. This is the highest of the three tiers of recognition the academy provides. The academy recognizes exemplary professional performance throughout a health sciences librarian’s career. Academy membership is awarded to health information professionals who have distinguished themselves in important areas of professional competencies through continuing education, job experience, and leadership in the profession.
In late 2015 Adrienne Brodie, our Library Assistant, was promoted to the position of Liaison Librarian serving ASHS and SOMA. She attended Drexel University to get her Master's of Library and Information Science degree. She enjoys the fundamentals of librarianship — assisting her faculty and students in their quest for actionable, relevant evidence/information, and troubleshooting any issues they encounter using the Library. Her first librarian position was at Shire Pharmaceuticals in Wayne, PA. After two years she decided to move to a warmer latitude with her husband and two cats. Her presence has already been strongly felt, and faculty, students, and staff in those two schools are encouraged to see what Adrienne can do for you. You will be pleased! In July 2016 we were pleased to welcome Kirsty Gaither, our new Educational Technology Support Librarian in Arizona. She will be working closely with both ETDC Director Bill Coombs, and Marsha Ham, Director of the Universities Teaching and Learning Center. Kirsty was born in Hong Kong, and brought up between Manchester, UK and the Bay Area, CA. She received her BA at Stanford University, and a dual Master's in the History of Science, Medicine and Technology, and Library and Information Studies from the University of Oklahoma. She's currently in the final stages her doctoral dissertation on how women in 18th-century England learned science and medicine through cooking. Kirsty loves educational technology. She's always looking for innovative ways to capture and display information. In her spare time Kirsty teaches cycling and TRX, power-lifts with her husband, and tries to help her two rescue dogs adjust to the AZ heat. In June, we said goodbye to Margaret Hoogland, our Library Liaison in Missouri for MOSDOH and CGHS. We already miss her, but wish her luck in her new position at the Mulford Health Sciences Library at the University of Toledo
Please welcome our New MO Branch Liaison Librarian Susan Swogger. She is taking over for Margaret as our Library Liaison for MOSDOH and CGHS. Her first day will be on Monday, September 19th. Susan has over 15 years Library experience including having spent the last seven years at the Health Sciences Library at the University of North Carolina.
