The new NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy is coming in 2023, but you can prepare now! For an overview of the policy and what it means for you, see the webinar recording and resource slide deck on the NIH Scientific Data Sharing website.
Webinar I: Understanding the New NIH Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Policy
In this webinar, NIH covers the basics of understanding the policy. They discuss DMS policy expectations, the applicability of the policy, how to prepare a Data Management and Sharing Plan, and considerations for sharing data responsibly. Resource Slide Deck
Webinar II: Diving Deeper into the new NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy
In this webinar, NIH takes a deeper dive into the details of the DMS Policy including information such as considerations for privacy protections for sharing human participant data, working with American Indian and Alaska Native communities, how the DMS Policy interacts with the Genomic Data Sharing Policy, and more. The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) recently issued updated policy guidance directing federal agencies to expedite access to results of federally funded research. NIH has long championed principles of transparency and accessibility in NIH-funded research. Over the coming months, NIH will work expeditiously to develop and share its plans for implementing the OSTP policy guidance. NIH intends to work with interagency partners and stakeholders to revise its current Public Access Policy to enable researchers, clinicians, students, and the public to access NIH research results immediately upon publication. NIH’s efforts to maximize access to scientific data are already underway through implementation of the new NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing (DMS Policy), which takes effect on January 25, 2023. Through the DMS Policy, NIH clearly articulates that sharing scientific data is fundamental to accelerating biomedical research discovery. DMS Policy implementation efforts continue, and researchers are encourage to visit sharing.nih.gov for the latest updates and resources that NIH has developed to support the research community and institutions.
The Center for Scientific Review (CSR) has announced release of the CSR 2022-2027 Strategic Plan. CSR is entrusted with most of the peer review that enables NIH to support a broad range of biomedical research. Their primary goal, to ensure that peer review identifies the strongest, most promising science, depends upon an evaluation process that is fair, independent, expert, timely, and free from inappropriate influences. The plan delineates five overarching goals that organize CSR’s current and future initiatives:
In a recent move hailed by open-access advocates, the White House has released guidance dictating that federally funded research be made freely and immediately available to the public. The Office of Science and Technology Policy's guidance calls for federal agencies to make taxpayer-supported research publicly available immediately, doing away with an optional 12-month embargo. It also requires the data underlying that research to be published. Federal agencies have until December 31, 2025, to institute the guidance. More...
AHRQ’s Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) Database has been updated and now provides a central source for community-level SDOH data at the county, ZIP code, and census tract levels. This “one stop” approach can help remove data barriers that may slow progress on research and delay interventions to improve health outcomes. The SDOH database is designed to enhance ongoing data collection and analysis efforts by providing standardized, well-documented, easy-to-use, linkable data spanning the SDOH domains of social context, economic context, education, healthcare, and physical infrastructure. NIH will host a workshop on November 10 to introduce tips and tricks for use of NCBI Account tools for NIH post-award reporting. The workshop will include a Q&A portion for participants. Please note that this workshop is designed for post-award activities. NCBI will be offering a pre-award “Creating an NIH or NSF Biosketch with SciENcv” workshop in early Spring 2023. Due to curricular and technical limits, there are a limited number of spots available to provide the best workshop experience. If you register to apply, you will be notified of your application status 2 weeks before the scheduled event.
