Grants & You Winter 2021-22: ATSU Internal Grant Opportunities

► ATSU Strategic Research Fund (SRF)

Maximum award is $30,000 for a project period of up to 2 years. This mechanism is ideal for interdisciplinary teams, novice ATSU faculty, and/or student research team members. SRF provides seed money to advance the development of a strong clinical research base for the scientific study of whole person healthcare by supporting small studies to collect pilot data.

► Community Health Research Fund

Maximum award is $2,000 for a project period of up to 2 years. This mechanism enables full-time faculty* (including at least 1 member of the ATSU Public Health program) to test promising pilot projects and/or conduct short-term continuation of existing research projects, such as:

• Research demonstrating public health solutions that can be implemented by communities themselves;
• Projects contributing to the existing public health body of knowledge;
• Projects promoting multi-disciplinary interaction to provide multi-faceted solutions; and
• Support for a cadre of public health researchers to help communities find solutions to their local problems.

► Herbert Fields, DO, Memorial Research Fund

Maximum award is $1,000 for a 1-year period. This mechanism is ideal for osteopathic students, pre-doctoral fellows, interns, and residents at KCOM or SOMA, and requires direct supervision by a full-time faculty member. This endowed fund enables the study of orthomolecular therapy, including interrelationships in the areas of nutrition analysis and therapy.

► Warner/Fermaturo &                                                                    The ATSU Board of Trustees Research Fund

Maximum award is $10,000 for a project period of up to 2 years. Funds from the Warner Endowments and Fermaturo Charitable Trust enable full-time faculty* to gain initial and/or interim support for promising research projects.

► Educational Scholarly Activity Research Grant

Maximum award is $5,000 for a project period of up to 2 years. This mechanism provides initial and/or interim support enabling full-time faculty* to study student learning and publish results in order to further improve the practice of teaching.

► ATSU Student Research Fund

Maximum award is $2,000 for a 1-year period. This mechanism is ideal for individual student-initiated projects under the supervision of a full-time ATSU faculty member. Students are encouraged to develop scientifically sound projects based on a critical review of the literature and utilization of appropriate research methods. Priority will be given to interdisciplinary research teams.

► ATSU Small Grant Program 

Maximum award is $1,500 to purchase supplies when the needs arise during the implementation of scholarly activity that were not foreseen when the project began, but which sometimes present an impediment to successful completion of the project. Use the ATSU Small Grant Program Request Form to indicate the item(s) requested, including a short description of the need, the aim of the project, and a signature from the faculty member’s chair or direct supervisor indicating that sufficient department funds are not available to support the need. A firm cost for the item(s) must also be included with the request. No carry over funds will be allowed, so approved funds must be used (e.g., ASTU Purchase Order issued, supply items received, and invoice received) by June 30.

► ATSU Publication Reimbursement Program

Average awards range from $500 to $1,500 depending on funds available. The purpose of this program is to assist researchers with manuscript publication fees when all other funding options have been exhausted. Reimbursement is considered for manuscripts published in journals that belong to the PLOS family of journals or which are indexed on Medline/PubMed, or listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). No carry over funds will be allowed, so approved transactions must be submitted for reimbursement (to the individual or department) to the Finance Office by June 30. Please use the ATSU Publication Reimbursement Request Form to provide cost details and obtain a signature from the faculty member’s chair or direct supervisor indicating that sufficient department funds are not available to support the need.

► ATSU Supplemental Travel Reimbursement Program

Maximum award is $1,000 for non-regional events and to supplement depleted departmental budgets for the respective requestor. The purpose of this program is to assist with research presentation/dissemination costs (e.g., in-person and virtual registration fees, travel expenses) for full-time ATSU faculty and postdocs when all other funding options have been exhausted. No carry over funds will be allowed, so the approved reimbursement (e.g., conference registration, travel) must occur and be submitted to the Finance Office by June 30. Please use the ATSU Supplemental Travel Reimbursement Request Form to provide expense details and obtain a signature from the faculty member’s chair or direct supervisor indicating that sufficient department funds are not available to support the need.

► ATSU Student Research Supplies Request Program

Maximum award is $500 to purchase research supplies only. The purpose of this program is to assist student researchers with research supplies when all other funding options have been exhausted. No carry over funds will be allowed, so approved funds must be used (e.g., ASTU Purchase Order issued, supply items received, and invoice received) by June 30. Please use the ATSU Student Research Supplies Request Form to provide supply cost details and obtain a signature from the faculty member’s chair or direct supervisor indicating that sufficient department funds are not available to support the need.
