DHSc ARP Guide: Data Collection Sources

This website will serve as a guide for all students enrolled in the Applied Research Project (ARP) course series, DHSC8020 (pre-requisite) and DHSC9015 to 9055. Please refer to the guide often for direction following up with the ARP Facilitator as needed.

Sources of Data

There are two sources of data: primary and secondary. Primary sources of data are data gathered directly by the researcher, including surveys/questionnaires, interviews, observations, and biophysical measurements (e.g., heart rate, blood pressure, weight, muscular strength). Secondary sources of data are existing data available through databases, such as "health-related data [collected] through the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and the U.S. Bureau of the Census..." (Portney & Watkins, 2015, p. 295).
