Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a fee?

            The library provides this service free.

Can I sign the documents before I appear before a notary?

            NO, the notary needs to witness you signing your document. All parties involved must be present to sign.

What type of identification do I need to bring?

A valid, unexpired state ID, Federal ID, or other government ID with signature and photo required, (example State ID card, US military ID, driver’s license, or passport.)

NOT Accepted: Social Security cards, credit cards with pictures, Club membership IDs, Birth certificates, Library cards.

Can the notary assist me in filling out or completing a document?

Notaries are not authorized to prepare or complete documents for others or give legal advice on any matter relating to a document.

Do you do electronic notarization?

Currently, we are unable to do electronic notary services.

Can library staff serve as witnesses?

NO, we do not provide witnesses. If your documents require witnesses, please bring them with you and make sure they have proper identification. You may not approach other patrons in the library to serve as witnesses. A witness must be personally known to you and be willing to stand up in court on your behalf, should that become necessary.

Do I need to be a Missouri resident to use the library’s notary service?

            NO, Anyone can receive these services, regardless of residence.
