School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona (SOMA) Clinical Preceptors and Faculty: OMS III

Dr Ashby is a board certified OBGYN who attended osteopathic medical school and trained in New Jersey. She has an active practice in gynecology in Beaufort SC and enjoys her time as RDME at BJHCHS. Her interests include bio identical hormone therapy and empowering women to take charge of their health.

Dr. Simon is Associate Professor of Pediatrics, the course director for the pediatrics course in the OMS IIIand OMS IIII, and the course director for the genitourinary course in the OMS II. Dr. Simon is also an attorney and lectures on medical jurisprudence and medical ethics.

Prior to joining the full-time ATSU faculty, Dr. Simon was a Regional Director of Medical Education at Adelante Healthcare in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Simon was a volunteer with the National Health Service Corps and was the United States Public Health Service Consultant for Maternal and Child Health for Region 2.

Dr. Simon has extensive experience as a practicing pediatrician and has served as the medical director of a community health center and a group of pediatric urgent care centers.

Dr. Simon received his MD degree from New York Medical College and did his pediatric residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Jacobi Hospital. Dr. Simon has extensive experience teaching medical students and residents in the private office, in community health centers and in the hospital.

Jay Crutchfield, MD, FACS, a native of Arizona, joined the teaching faculty of SOMA in June, 2010. Dr. Crutchfield, a board-certified general surgeon, received his bachelor of arts degree in Chemistry from the University of Arizona, a doctorate in medicine from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine (New York, NY). He is a former member of the Arizona Medical Board (appointed by Governor Hull), and the Arizona Regulatory Board of Physician Assistants (appointed by Governor Jan Brewer).

At SOMA, Dr. Crutchfield will join the anatomy faculty and developing the surgery curriculum. In his spare time, he enjoys astronomy, astrophotography, and collecting rock n' roll memorabilia.

Dr. Coppola is actively involved at SOMA as course co-director for NMSK B, lecturer, small group’s moderator, and physical examination instructor. Prior to a medical career, Dr. Coppola was a research scientist in neurophysiology and neuropharmacology as well as medical school basic science instructor. After graduating Des Moines University-COMS he completed a neurology fellowship at The Cleveland Clinic and practiced neurology for over thirty years. He previously served as medical school educator at Ohio University and other medical schools.

Dr. Grace Stewart attended Texas Tech University School of Medicine, and served her residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center.
