Missouri Campus Library Open House - Branch Director Update

Unfortunately the ground hog saw his shadow which means six more weeks of winter weather.  The biggest news for Missouri is that we had to close the campus due to inclement weather that dumped up to 16 inches of snow in Kirksville within two weekends.  The snow and wind contributed to dangerous driving conditions, causing drifting and slick roads.  MODOT had over 250 snow removal trucks on Northeast MO. highways trying to keep the roads clear.  Our MO. ATSU campus shut down early 3 pm. 2/4/2014 in an effort to allow students and staff  to travel safely to their homes before dark.  We were open for business again at 11 am. Wed. 2/5/2014.  I have worked on the Missouri campus for 27 years and can remember only two other times the campus closed due to bad weather.

Library Projects & Still One Search Training - Spring 2014

Jean Sidwell participated in an online Hang-Out Session about “Still OneSearch,” along with Harold Bright, Cynthia Porter, Jean Varnold and Bryan Krusniak.  1/28/2014.

Jean Sidwell and Mike Kronenfeld met with Dr. Lex Towns, Assistant Dean, Education Development & Services and Dr. Rob Baer, Professor Physiology to demonstrate “Still OneSearch,” during Mike’s quarterly visit to Kirksville. Our goal is to reach out to all the departments on campus to promote the recently rolled out one stop search box and the libraries new web page where “Still OneSearch” resides.

Jean Sidwell and Margaret Hoogland demonstrated “Still OneSearch” for Basic Science Seminar/faculty and Bio-Medical students 2/10/2014.

The library has agreed to catalog for check-out - clickers and easels etc. items formerly housed in Academic Technologies.

The library continues a weeding project of print books with a projected date to finish by June 30, 2014.  Mary Sims, Technical Services Librarian and Daryl Shafer, Acquisitions are in the process of updating  catalog records from MOBIUS /OCLC holdings of books that have been weeded from the collection.

Daryl Shafer continues to convert historical U-Matic and VHS tapes to digital format for the museum’s Past Perfect database.  The project is on schedule to be completed by end of March 2014.

Posters presented at Medical Library Association Annual meeting in Chicago May 2014.

Jean’s poster:  “Preserving Osteopathic history: the challenge of converting media formats to digital.”  Margaret’s poster:  “Distance Support Services: Defining, Discussing, and Determining Future Roles.”

Jean Sidwell has met with  Jason Haxton, Director of Museum; Deb Summers, curator; and Anna Mullen Researcher-Conservator B, to plan for two posters that will be presented at AACOM in Washington D.C.  Poster titles:  “An Educational Foundation: Osteopathic Schools in the Early Twentieth-Century,” and “ASO to ATSU: From a Physicians College to a Healthcare University in Kirksville.”
