Missouri Campus Library Open House - Branch Director Update

The library has been preparing for Open House on October 15-16th.  An exhibition poster “Everyday Miracles: Medical Imagery in Ex-Votos,” developed and produced by the National Library of Medicine will be on display.  This display of devotional paintings express thanks to a saint or deity for a miraculous healing or blessing.  The faithful have always used prayer to invoke the aid of the saints as a means to heal the sick and end one’s suffering.  Usually painted on tin, ex-votos are created as a personal expression of thanks and a public testimony to faith and gratitude.  Also on display during Library Open House are posters illustrating projects and services provided by the library.  A drawing for a T-shirt donated by Matthews Book Store, library tours, library online resource training, and cookies/punch are scheduled.

One poster features an ongoing project by Library staff, who implemented a preservation plan to preserve and convert analog tapes of Osteopathic historical content to a digital format which will be cataloged and stored on the museum’s Past Perfect database.  The goal of the plan is to preserve the historical content so the digital content is accessible to patrons for future Osteopathic research.

Activities included visits from Truman State University, Kansas City University of Medicine & Biosciences, and an interview with Jean Sidwell on the local television station discussing some of the Open House exhibits.

Winners of the t-shirt drawing are Marcus Lyon (KCOM, 2nd year), Karl Boehm (Anatomy Fellow), and Grant Griebe (KCOM, 2nd Year). Pictured below from left to right are Jean Sidwell, Missouri Branch Director, Marcus Lyon, Grant Griebe, and Peggy Mikel, Manager of Matthew's Bookstore.  Unfortunately, Karl Boehm was unable to be a part of the picture.  Thank you to all who participated in the raffle and a special thanks to Peggy and Kathy from Matthew's Bookstore for working with us to make this happen!

Welcome to MOSDOH & Incoming KCOM Students!

Jean Sidwell attended the KCOM Orientation and presented brief points on copyright and intellectual property to the first year class, July 10th, and attended their White Coat Ceremony, July 13th.  She also participated in the Missouri School of  Dentistry & Oral Health (MOSDOH) Faculty Orientation by giving a brief presentation on library resources and services on August 16th. September was most eventful as the first MOSDOH class descended upon Kirksville.  The Innaugural class of 42 dental students started October 1st, 2013.

Margaret Hoogland, Distance Support Librarian gave a brief Orientation to the MOSDOH students on library resources & services on September 26th and attended their White Coat Ceremony on the 28th.

MOSDOH facts:

•Students complete their first two years of study on ATSU’s Missouri campus.

•Third and fourth-year clinical education is based in St. Louis, which provides an adequate population base of patients in need of dental services. At least half of the fourth-year clinical experiences are distributed in community health centers (CHCs) and other safety net clinics in Missouri and the Midwest, including our partner in Kirksville – the Northeast Missouri Health Council.

•Forming partnerships with CHCs carries out MOSDOH’s mission to serve underserved populations, including the uninsured, underinsured, and rural areas, which will help to address a critical shortage of dentists in Missouri.
