Program Overview

This online, Postgraduate Certificate in Psychiatry and Behavioral Health program is designed to provide advanced educational training in psychiatry and behavioral health medicine for practicing physician assistants. A Competency-Based Education (CBE) approach is used to allow students to obtain mastery of each classification of mental health disorders. Major psychiatric disorders, as outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistics Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Ed. (DSM-V), are arranged as self-paced competency modules in each course. Signs, symptoms, diagnostic methods, treatment, pharmacological, legal and ethical considerations of each disorder classification are examined and culminate with challenging case-based assessments.

Competency Based Education

This program defines “competency” as a demonstration of a student’s ability to apply knowledge and critical thinking skills to the development of diagnostic and management strategies for varying complex patient cases. The Competency-Based Education (CBE) modality provides a platform for an innovative, learner-focused exploration of mental health disorders. CBE enables students to progress at their own pace as they demonstrate mastery of the course content. The CBE model measures learning and outcomes rather than “seat-time”, requiring that students demonstrate mastery of the outlined competencies through multiple objective measures that mimic clinical practice tasks, with the focus on formative measures and specific feedback.
